On a trip around the world, every day feels like Saturday. A MAP FOR SATURDAY reveals a world of long-term, solo travel through the stories of trekkers on four continents. The documentary finds backpackers helping neglected Thai tsunami victims. It explains why Nepal’s guesthouses are empty and Brazil’s stoplights are ignored. But at its core, SATURDAY tracks the emotional arc of extreme long-term travelers; teenagers and senior citizens who wondered, “What would it be like to travel the world?” Then did it. We heard about this documentary that was being shown downtown last week about a guy who quit his job as a movie producer for HBO to travel around the world by himself. He took a camera with him and documented his experiences with the places he traveled and the people he met along the way. It was sponsored by Hosteling International, a company that operates hostels around the world for backpackers. The guy from HI who introduced the film started with a disclaimer: "Hosteling International takes no responsibility if you announce tomorrow that you are quitting your job." Fair enough, because the film was so inspiring that we left thankful that we were already planning our trip! Brooke, the producer/star of the film was there to answer everyone's questions afterward (it was a sold out theater!), which was cool. We left even more excited about our trip than before, equipped with more trip advice from someone who has been there/done that, and happy to have found the inspiration for the name of our blog: 191 Saturdays.
